The story of how I quit my job and went to play in Madrid

About Us

Throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.
~ Mark Twain ~
Margaux is an New Englander who found her true home in sunny San Diego. She works for an online media company that transferred her to Madrid, Spain.  Margaux does not speak Spanish, and her New England accent adds a little extra “flava” to the challenge of learning a new language.  She loves wine and good food.
I am Jean, and I am going with Margaux on this adventure. Travel has been my dream since I was a kid, and I jumped at the opportunity to go with her.  I put in notice at my work, turned in our intent to vacate our apartment, and sold everything we own. It’s terrifying and so liberating to get off the crazy train we in the States call a “career path.”  I’m hoping to study Spanish until I am completely fluent, learn yoga and art, tear through the stack of books that I have been accumulating but never have had time to read, and figure out how to set up a home in a foreign country. Eventually, I’ll get back to school or work, but I am taking a mini-retirement to re-evaluate what I really want out of life.  I am perfectly content to support Margaux and enjoy these new experiences by her side.

We have been saving and working together to make our goal of traveling a real possibility for the past five years.  We’ve been paying off our debts, and saving up as much as we can, though sticking to a real budget will be a new challenge as we go from two incomes to one. We have lots to learn, but we are determined to make traveling our priority and continue to spend little in order to save a lot.

Stay tuned and follow our adventure!
